What Christmas means to me

Christmas is one of my favourite times of the year because it’s a day where we celebrate the birth of Jesus.  Jesus is my Savior and beloved Christ.

Those who know me know that I’m big on birthdays and love to celebrate with others. The essence of Jesus’ birthday has somehow gotten lost in the whole giving and receiving of gifts. And that saddens me, but to me Christmas is all about the story of Jesus’ birth. Starting from when the angel visits Mary to tell her that she is carrying the Messiah, to her and Joseph running off to Bethlehem.  King Herald sending out his men to look for baby Jesus and then Jesus is born in a stable, wow. The King of Kings, born in a stable, who would have thought.

As December kicks in all I want to hear is Christmas Carols like O Holy Night, that’s one of my favourite Christmas Carols.

I want to hear the story of Jesus being told every Sunday, till the 25 December. Oh what a celebration it is, in song.

The morning of Christmas you can even hear the birds sing louder and sweeter than ever in the year and the earth smells so fresh and clean. Oh what a glorious day it is for me.

In my family, we spend the morning at our family Church, with other families to hear the story of Jesus’ birth. The men braai and the ladies cook, make salads and desserts.  Then we spend the rest of the day braaing and eating, sharing memories of the year and laughing.  In between I get to sneak in a movie or two to relax while digesting that heavy lunch.

In celebrating Jesus’ birthday I think the coming together of families to fellowship, eat, laugh and be merry is what God had in mind for that day and how it should be celebrated.

Just like every year, we never plan who will visit who or where we will be for Christmas, but we will be together and that makes it perfect.
