Your fantasies may be ruining your life

Have you ever considered that your fantasies may be ruining your life?  You might say that fantasising is fun and adds excitement to your life. You might say that fantasising is a harmless way of escaping doldrums.

It can be harmless but it can also be harmful, depending on what you are fantasising about.

Usually we fantasize to fill a deeper void.

Turmoil is certainly one of the leading reasons we might begin fantasising. We may want things we think we’ll never have. We might have feelings of rejection, loneliness, and discontentment. When we experience these feelings, what are we to do? We fantasise.

By definition, a fantasy, is something that seems great in our minds, but doesn’t exist in reality. It is an illusion; a mirage based on our unchecked desires and corrupted hearts.

Other definitions as well including being unrealistic, conceit, an imagined idea.

In the Book of Philippians 4:8 the Apostle Pauls says, “And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honourable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise”.

Fantasies therefore must be in line with this scripture. But most of our fantasies are never true or pure. In fact they speak to our selfish areas in our lives, where everything revolves around us.

Fantasies are also tricks that we play on ourselves when we don’t want to deal with life.

And all too often, we fantasise about using those things not to serve others, but to serve ourselves.

I am not saying that you should stop fantasizing.  All I am saying is make sure that your fantasies are in line with God’s Word. And listen to your Spirit. The Holy Spirit is our Helper. If we don’t what to do, if we ask Him and engage Him, He is willing to help us.

God gives us talents and resources for a reason: He wants us to use them to serve the people that He brings into our lives. So often, though, our fantasies are based not on talents or resources that we do have, but only those we wish we had.

You need to make a plan to replace your fantasies with pure thoughts.

The reason you need to replace this is because you literally need to build a NEW habit for your mind.

Our minds are like muscles… when they do something enough times it becomes a pattern or habit. Sometimes it’s a good habit, other times it’s a bad habit.

Unholy fantasies won’t stop on their own. You have to work to stop them and yes God will help you. But there are practical things that must be done.

The same way you developed those sinful fantasies is the same way you need to develop new pure fantasies.

It will be painful and it will be hard work but with God it is possible.

Rather than let fantasies rule us, let’s bring them under God’s rule, allowing the Lord to heal us from the brokenness and insecurities that cause inappropriate fantasies to haunt us.
