I am not a Proverbs 31 woman

The illusion of the "good Christian woman" remains as strong as ever.   And unfortunately Proverbs 31 woman is not the mandate from God for women as the Church would like us to believe.

According to the Bible Proverbs 31 woman is a personification, a vision of a mother for her son. Go read that whole chapter again. Read it in the King James version.

I have always known that this particular proverb was written by a mother to her son but for some weird reason I have been stuck with the idea that the if I'm going to be a "good Christian woman" I need to be like the Proverbs 31 woman.

When I was growing up in the Lord, all I wanted was to be approved by the older women in my Church. And so, I learned to “conform” myself to their standards. Not that they were Christ like, I just wanted to be liked by them. I just worked my way to being good and unfortunately I always fell short of their "glory".

Because I was not a Proverbs 31 woman.

And those were the most miserable years of my life as a Christian woman.

I spend that part of my life with very little understanding of my Father’s incredible love, very little understanding of the message of grace, very little understanding of the power of the blood of Jesus, and very little understanding of the ministry of the Holy Spirit.

I have never related to her; not in the way she has been preached to me.  Why?

Because when I was growing up I was never day dreaming about a husband/wedding like other girls did or even taking care of a home and family.

I was planning to be a billionaire and to travel the world.

So, the older I got the more I realised that I don’t fit into the Church’s woman ideal that is continuously being taught - the Proverbs 31 woman.

And God helped me to discover Whose I am and who I am.

I learned that scripture had various personalities and that we are good in different areas.

I didn't have to measure up to someone else's dream/vision. God has already poured out His visions/dreams in me. Jeremiah 29:11-14

I also realised that Christianity is a meant to be a freedom of the whole person rather than being contained in guidelines that limit our minds to explore life, love, and the pursuit of happiness.

In Him I live. In Him I move. In Him I have our being.

No one should be the centre of our focus but Jesus Christ Alone.

You see the Proverbs 31 woman is good with "behaviour modification and managing” women.

 I am not a Proverbs 31 woman

Laws don’t change people. God’s love does. And God does NOT make mistakes.  It's the Church that makes mistakes.

Jesus is my measure, nothing more, nothing less.

Don't get me wrong, the Proverbs 31 Woman has a lot of wisdom and we can definitely learn from her. But unfortunately she has been used to enslave women into "people's ideas, traditions, cultures and patriach" systems.

And the truth is Jesus loves women.

There are numerous examples of significant roles women played in Jesus' ministry, roles which, although unacceptable to the culture of the day, nevertheless display Jesus' full endorsement of women and their desire to minister.

And I know, I am still not a Proverbs 31 woman.

In fact, I am more than that.

I am the righteousness  of God through faith in Christ Jesus.  Righteousness means right standing.  2 Corinthians 5:21

I am born of God's Spirit. Washed in His Son's blood.

Now tell me, what can be better than that?
