But God promised us to never live us nor forsake us. It is a bit hard to believe that truth when you are between a rock and a hard place in your life. But that’s the truth of God and it will not change.
First and foremost we need to learn how to encourage ourselves. The Bible says in 1 Samuel 30:6, “… but David encouraged himself in the Lord his God”. He became his own cheerleader. There was nobody else to do it for him or with him. According to the Bible every man in Judah was experiencing discouragement. But David stepped out in faith and reached out to God.
And that is the same for you sometimes. You will have lonely times in your life. There will be times when you are misunderstood or when people are not supporting you. And during those stressful, painful times it will be important for you to learn to turn your whole focus immediately to God. Like David you’re going to have to become your own best cheerleader and press into God and “find your strength in the Lord,” and “encourage yourself.” The good news is that, once you switch your mind to God you find the Holy Spirit ready to carry you through. That's how good God is to us. He helps us in our times of trouble but we still need to yield to Him. God might not change the situation but He will definitely give you peace.
I personally find that reading my favourite Bible scriptures or reading my diary or listening to encouraging music helps me a lot. I also talk to myself and remind myself about God’s promises.
Maybe today you are troubled in your spirit, maybe you are feeling discouraged, maybe you are feeling worthless. Take heart. God will strength your heart. Like my pastor always say, if you can breathe you can win. Allow the Holy Spirit to inspire your thoughts. And if you have to, sing songs that speak life to your life. If you have to speak, speak God’s promises over your life. Whatever you have to do to get out of that rut, do it. Don’t believe the lie that you have to stay discouraged. Kick discouragement out. Encourage yourself in the Lord. Say with David:
Bless the LORD, O my soul,
and forget not all His benefits:
Who forgives all your iniquities,
Who heals all your diseases,
Who redeems your life from destruction,
Who crowns you with loving-kindness and tender mercies,
Who satisfies your mouth with good things,
So that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s. (Psalm 103.2-5)
Remember that God responds to faith. So, no matter how hurt you are or how discouraged you feel, stay in faith. Don’t let the devil rob you of your weapon of faith. Keep you faith switch on.
Remember you are allowed to feel discouraged but you don’t have to stay discouraged.
